Frequently asked questions

The questions families ask most before starting.

Is this an app for my child to use?

No. Kinlingua is a tool for the parent or caregiver — there are no child accounts and no child-facing screens. It helps you build and follow a plan; your child experiences that as ordinary family life, not as an app.

How is this different from a language-learning app like Duolingo?

Kinlingua isn't a lesson app or a vocabulary drill. Kids need real, live interaction with a language — not apps or DVDs on their own — to actually speak it, not just understand it. Kinlingua is a household system: it turns that into a daily plan sized to your actual schedule, a way to see how much real exposure your child is getting, and support for the parent doing the talking.

What if I'm not fluent in the heritage language myself?

There's a built-in practice mode for exactly this: phrases for real daily moments (bath time, breakfast, and so on), a spaced-repetition recall drill so they actually stick, and a plain-language sound-pair guide for the pronunciation pairs that commonly trip up a non-native ear. Your job is consistency at bath and breakfast, not perfection.

Where is my family's data stored?

On your own device. Kinlingua doesn't require an account to start, and everything you enter is saved locally until you choose to do more. There are no ads, no data sale, and no affiliate revenue.

Does Kinlingua use streaks, scores, or a way to “fail” a day?

No. There are deliberately no streaks, no scores, and no red states. A day you didn't get to your plan is just a day, not a failure the app tracks against you.

Can grandparents or other relatives get involved?

Yes. Most extended family already use WhatsApp, so Kinlingua sends simple, specific asks there instead of expecting a grandparent to install a new app or make an account.

We're raising our child in three or more languages — does Kinlingua handle that?

Yes. Trilingual and multilingual households are fully supported, not treated as an edge case. Your plan splits real practice time across every language you're actively teaching, with its own breakdown per language rather than a bilingual plan stretched to fit.

Do I pay per child?

No. Kinlingua bills the household, never the child, and the core planning tools — the plan generator, daily check-in, and family audit — are never paywalled, on any tier. See the pricing page for the full tier breakdown.

Why do prices differ by country?

Kinlingua prices each currency against a real, already-public comparable in that market, rather than a flat currency conversion of the US price — the idea being what a family actually finds affordable where they live, not what the number looks like after an exchange-rate calculation. The pricing page explains this in more detail.

Still have a question?

The best way to see how it fits your family is to try the plan generator — no account needed.
